SANITARY SEWERS... Several residents of the Borough have had questions regarding tree roots in their sanitary sewer system. We hope the following information will clarify the Borough's responsibility:

The Borough is responsible to maintain and upkeep the flow of the larger central sanitary sewers in the middle of the street. The homeowner is responsible for the smaller sanitary sewer leading from inside the house up to the connection in the middle of the street. It does not matter whether tree roots in a homeowner's sewer system are from public or private trees. The Borough can and will assist homeowners whenever possible by cleaning out Borough sewer lines and by using a camera to examine possible problems.

Most homeowner's sewer lines are made of cast iron or clay. Over a period of time, these sewer lines tend to develop fissure cracks or separations where they are connected. Tree roots may begin to enter these openings and grow, eventually creating a sewer line clog. A professional sewer cleaning service may be called to clean out these roots. Sometimes a "root killing" chemical can be put into your line to keep roots at bay.
